GHOST

RIS CREW

GHOST was one of the last kings of the New York City train writing era. He experimented with traditional letter styles until developing his own loose, funky and psychedelic letters that sprouted from his twisted drug-seeped brain and his passion for bombing. When most writers see a train yard as an opportunity to paint a nice colorful piece, Ghost sees the yard as a place to bomb, to do hundreds of throw-ups. He approaches his paintings with the same zest and casual grace as he does his throw-ups, with bold dripping explosions of vibrant colors and freaky cartoons. With frequent trips to Europe his style has inspired the new wave of Scandinavian-loose-bombing-style pieces. Today, he exhibits his artwork in galleries worldwide and does collaborations with urban culture brands. Despite this Ghost remains an enigma, he isn’t social, and he does not want to be your friend. But his artwork like his bombing is something fantastic that deserves attention, for this he is overdue.

Cooper’s other books of photographs include Hip Hop Files: Photographs 1979–1984 (From Here To Fame, 2004) and R.I.P.: Memorial Wall Art (Thames & Hudson, 1994) with text by folklorist Joseph Sciorra. PART ONE

THE DEATH SQUAD

PART ONE entered the subway graffiti movement in 1974 just after the foundations for piecing had been laid down. He began doing the bubble and mechanical styles of the era and by 1975-6 he truly came into his own. From 1977 to 1980, few writers could compete with PART ONE and his TDS partners. Today, PART ONE is still active and going strong - his funkified pieces give the newer generations of writers a real run for their money even by today’s standards.

SABE

FYS CREW

Danish graffiti maestro Sabe is a true master of styles. Adept on many levels, he is able to switch between advanced mechanical compositions, new-wave bubble styles, throw-ups, characters and photo-realism with ease. With a ‘paint now, think later’ attitude he mixes up these styles to suit the occasion, leaving a legacy of playful hybrids that sit left of mainstream. Never one to be called a slacker, he has an execution rate that leaves most gasping for air. Sabe remains active, prolific and influential even after more than twenty five years on the run.

SENTO

THE FANTASTIC PARTNERS

Since 1983, Sento has been an active graffiti artist painting every surface that holds still long enough to get a fresh coat of Krylon paint. The self-proclaimed ‘king of swing’ was intent on taking what he had learned from the pioneers of the subway movement to a whole other level, playing with graffiti convention to create something new and unique. His repertoire included block letters, script styles, simple styles and tough cartoon imagery, inspired by Bode. By the late 80’s his work had become stylistically more complex, with abstract wild-styles and by the nineties he was attaching all kinds of crazy stuff to his pieces, like telephones. He is the Vice-President of the legendary Fantastic Partners crew, a true all-city subway writer who took his talent beyond his neighborhood and hit up places across the world. When New York was feeling the effects of the MTA’s Buff policy and subway graffiti was dying out, only hardcore writers like Sento continued.
